What’s Stewing

They didn’t know whether they should tell their mom. They were scared of her reaction.

Their hearts sank.

They were generally good kids. The trouble they had gotten in before at least was within the limits of the law, but now, it was different.

They had police records. They had mugshots. They couldn’t afford a lawyer for expunging their records after serving their sentence.

Their behavior marred the rest of their lives. Their behavior jeopardized others’ lives.

And yet, what they were most worried about was their mom.

Their mom was going to kill them. They knew their mom would make them feel like they should have stayed in jail.

They spent the night in jail.

The judge arraigned them the next morning.

One of them picked up the phone.

The others looked on.
